The History of the Borders

Welcome to our 17th Century Coaching Inn

The main road appears to have run between the important market towns of Morpeth and Hexham visiting Whalton, Ponteland, Stamfordham, Matfen, Great Whittington and Corbridge.

Contrary to popular belief, the nearby, Military Road was not builtby Hadrian and his Romans. It was General Wade who built it after 1745 when his intended ambush of 'Bonnie Prince Charlie' at Newcastle backfired.

The Queens Head Inn, today

As the Queens Head prospered as a coaching inn and business grew, so did the settlement growing up around it. It is now central to the St Oswalds Walk and close to Matfen, Dissington & Belsay Halls, Alnwick Castle & Gardens, the Roman Forts & Hadrians Wall.
